Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) can cause severe burning pain, sensitivity, swelling, temperature or color changes and other symptoms after an injury or procedure. When CRPS affects an upper extremity and the sympathetic nervous system appears to contribute to the pain, a stellate ganglion block may be considered as part of a broader treatment plan.

The stellate ganglion carries sympathetic nerve signals to the upper extremity. Temporarily blocking these signals may help determine whether the pain has a sympathetic component and may provide relief in selected patients. Response varies, and SGB is usually one part of multidisciplinary CRPS care rather than the only treatment.

Patients may be considered when symptoms and examination suggest sympathetically maintained pain, especially when pain involves the arm or hand. The decision also considers medical history, prior treatments, medications, function and rehabilitation goals.
SGB may fit alongside medication management when appropriate, physical or occupational rehabilitation, desensitization and functional restoration, selected sympathetic blocks, and neuromodulation or other advanced options when symptoms remain severe.

For a broader overview of symptoms and diagnosis, visit the CRPS condition page. For mechanism and preparation details, review the SGB overview, how SGB works, and what to expect before and after SGB.
Medway Pain Center can evaluate your symptoms, medical history and treatment goals to determine whether stellate ganglion block may be a reasonable option.
