What to Expect Before and After SGB

What to Expect Before and After a Stellate Ganglion Block

Your care team will review your medical history, current medications, allergies and the reason for the block. Follow the clinic's instructions about food, medications, transportation and arrival time. Do not stop blood thinners or other prescribed medications unless specifically instructed by the appropriate clinician.

During the Procedure

You will be positioned so the physician can safely access the side of the neck. Image guidance is used to identify the target area and nearby structures. After the skin is prepared and numbed, medication is placed near the sympathetic nerves. Monitoring continues during and after the procedure.

After the Procedure

Temporary changes such as warmth in the arm, eye redness, nasal stuffiness, a hoarse voice or eyelid drooping can occur after a successful sympathetic block and typically improve as the medication wears off. The clinic will provide discharge instructions and explain when to seek medical attention.

Follow-Up

Track changes in pain, function or the specific symptoms being treated. The response helps your physician determine whether the block was useful and whether any further treatment is appropriate. A repeat procedure should never be presented as automatic; it depends on the indication, response and clinical judgment.
